6 Toxic Beliefs are Killing Your Cleaning Business

Published on January 21, 2016

As the owner of your cleaning company, your employees look up to you. They pay attention to how you act and what you say. Your thoughts lead to actions, and your actions are the foundation for your company's culture.

Because you are so important to your employees, they often know what you believe in.

Your beliefs sway your company's culture more than you know, and if you aren't self-aware, some of your beliefs might be killing your business. For cleaning company owners, these are the top six toxic beliefs that are ruining your company:

1. My Business Must Be Perfect

Here's a given: every house you clean must be perfect (or as close as you can reasonably make it). But when it comes to running your business, everything cannot be perfect. You will never meet every single one of your goals, you will never create the perfect marketing piece, and you will never have a 'perfect' company.

Advice: Focus on your direction, not your destination.

2. Failure is Permanent

Just as stains can be cleaned from carpets, so can your failures be lifted from your past. Don't allow your past mistakes to overwhelm you, or prevent you from progressing as a person. A truly successful business owner knows that failure is part of the game.

Advice: Forgive yourself for past failures. Think about what each failure has taught you, and how you can learn from them in the future.

3. Emotions vs. Reality

Emotions have the power to skew your perception of reality. As a business owner, it is your job to keep an impartial view of your business, no matter how much a client is bothering you, or how vast your problems feel. Don't ever let your emotions get control of you.

Advice: Relax, and try to separate yourself from the problem, so you can think with a cool head.

4. My Self-worth Comes from Others

Your self-worth should come from within. You should not be so easily affected by the positive praise or negative comments of others. Listen to what people have to say, of course, but don't let it change who you are or what you intend to accomplish.

Advice: Write out your "Why" - your purpose for starting a company - and keep it somewhere visible. When you sit down to work, remind yourself by looking at this paper that you are on a mission. Don't let anyone stop you.

5. It's Better to Blend In

It's hard to be a leader. Most people in this world are followers - they do what others do, talk like others talk, and generally prefer to be lead by someone who takes the initiative. YOU are the business owner. YOU take the initiative. You don't copy others, you learn from them, and make your own path.

Advice: Take the initiative, and think up your own advice for this section. Yep, you're on your own. Go forth and lead.

6. I Don't Need Help

Nothing great has ever been accomplished alone. Can you build a multi-million dollar company without employees? Don't allow your ego to get ahead of practicality. There is nothing wrong with asking for help when you need it.

Advice: First, thank your employees for all that they do. Let them know that you couldn't build your company without them. Then, find a peer group like Service Autopilot Academy, and start getting help from other real professionals.

If any of these toxic beliefs are weighing you down, you can be assured that they are weighing down your company. Free yourself from this kind of thinking, and get back to growing your cleaning business.
